Origin of and Reasons behind Fashion
The word "fashion", according to Cambridge Advanced Learners' Dictionary, refers to a style that is popular at a particular time, especially in clothes, hair, make-up, etc. It is connected primarily with clothing and personal appearance. Alongside fashion, there was the traditional costume or simply put, clothing that emphasizes its functional aspect, that is, providing protection from extreme heat or cold and facilitating people's movements as they engage in their daily tasks and duties. But clothing is not designed merely for practical use; since the beginning of time, it has served equally to decorate the human body. Fashion sees to it that we are not satisfied with functionality. Fashion emphasizes transience Whoever wants to be stylish follows fashion that entails constant change. Indeed, one enjoys changing one's looks. Most importantly, fashion also integrates individual personality. Through fashion, one is able to project one's distinct traits and character. One shows her aesthetic sense through fashion. Some people use fashion to express their erotic sense. But for a Christian woman, fashion is an expression of her dignity, a calm and cheerful quality that emanates from knowing that she is a daughter of the good and loving Father in heaven, the maker of heaven and earth. Fashion is an integral component of a culture. Like literature, painting or film, fashion is an essential part of the imaginative tradition of creating images in our culture. Indeed, a woman can contribute to creating a culture filled with "gracefully- and-elegantly-dressed-woman images" by the way she dresses up and looks the part. |
