Movie downloads next for Apple?
SEATTLE, Washington (Reuters) -- Nearly five years ago when Apple Computer Inc. introduced the iPod digital music player and companion iTunes music software, it created a legitimate market for music downloads and solved a problem vexing the technology industry.

In an announcement expected Tuesday, analysts anticipate Apple will deliver a product to solve the entertainment industry's current dilemma: how to bridge the gap between the living room television and the computer -- movie downloads.

If Apple could solve that problem, analysts see the potential for another round of robust growth at a time when the company is facing a growing number of competitors in the digital music market, including Microsoft Corp.(From: CNN 2006/09/12 )

1,000 demonstrators continue anti-president protest in Taiwan; weekend march planned.
About 1,000 demonstrators continued a fourth day of protests outside Taiwan's Presidential Office Building on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of President Chen Shui-bian over a series of alleged corruption scandals.

Shih Ming-teh, a former chairman of Chen's Democratic Progressive Party, started the protest on a boulevard outside the building on Saturday. The demonstrators plan to march close to Chen's office and residence this weekend.

The protesters — most of whom were wearing red as a sign of their anger against Chen —flashed the "thumbs down" sign at passing traffic.

On Saturday, police said more than 90,000 people joined the first day of the protest, but pouring rain reduced numbers on Sunday.

For more than six months Chen has battled allegations that his family and inner circle have used their positions for personal financial gain. Chen has insisted he is innocent and has no reason to step down before the end of his term in May 2008.

Parody “Wikiality”? – Watch Out the Truth Been Told!
KIKI:Hey, how's it going? Oh, you are watching The Colbert Report again.
WIWI:Yeah. Man, this guy is really something. He always seems to have such an impact on people; out of his mouth comes many sharp criticisms.
KIKI:He does look like a guy if everybody in a room says yes, he would say no, and can tell piles of reasons. You know that face – deadpan, with a normal sarcastic delivery. So, what’s on his agenda to bitch about this time?
WIWI:He’s giving a hard time on Wikipedia.
KIKI:Wikipedia? What about?
WIWI:He’s saying people are bringing democracy to knowledge. You see, any user can change any entry (in Wikipedia), and if most other users agree with them, it would become true, if only the entire body of human knowledge worked this way.
KIKI:Tell me about that. Think about it. Why do you trust Britannica when it says George Washington had slaves? If I want to say he didn't, that's my right. And now, thanks to Wikipedia, it's also a fact.
WIWI:Yeah, all we need to do is to convince a majority of people that some factoid is true.
KIKI:Yep, we can all CREATE a reality that we all can agree on; the reality that we JUST agreed on.
WIWI:And Colbert announced a neologism wikiality, a portmanteau of the words Wikipedia and reality.
KIKI:Yeah, he’s such a big fan of these buzzwords. In the first episode, truthiness is another vogue word coined by Colbert.
WIWI:What? What’s that all about?
KIKI: Well, instead of google, why don’t you go check it out by wikiing.

Pumpkins: Not Just for Halloween
II.

Pumpkins

I'm Faith Lapidus with the VOA Special English Agriculture Report.

Many Americans celebrated Halloween on Monday by placing pumpkins outside their homes. A Halloween tradition is to cut a face into the big, round squash.

Pumpkins are also an important part of the Thanksgiving holiday in late November. Tradition says early settlers ate pumpkin pie, or something similar to it, with the Native Americans during the first celebration.

Pumpkins are members of the gourd family. They are related to melons, cucumbers and squashes. They are, like all of their relatives, fruit, not vegetables. Pumpkins have firm flesh, seeds in the center and a shell that is usually orange. And they contain more vitamin A than almost any other fruit.

Pumpkins have been grown for thousands of years in North and Central America. They have been grown for so long, in fact, it is unclear what wild relative the plant has. Pumpkins grow on vines or bushes. Most pumpkins weigh a few kilograms, but some have reached well over four hundred fifty kilograms.

Pumpkin flowers are usually fertilized by bees. The insects carry reproductive material called pollen from the male to the female flowers. No fruit will grow if the female flower is not pollinated at the right time.

Closely related squashes and gourds can also fertilize pumpkins. This cross-pollination will show itself not in the current year’s pumpkins, but in seeds grown the following year.
Pumpkin is used in pies, breads, cakes and other baked goods. Baked pumpkin seeds are also a popular food. Pumpkin filling for pies is produced industrially.

Pumpkins are very low in acid, unlike many fruits. This makes canned pumpkin a place where the bacteria that causes botulism food poisoning can grow. For this reason, experts say it is not a good idea to can crushed pumpkin at home. Whole pumpkins, however, store well in cool, dark places for weeks.

Less than one percent of the American pumpkin supply is imported or exported. Most pumpkins are used in the states where they are grown. Prices can be very different from place to place.

American farmers grew over four hundred fifty million kilograms of pumpkins last year. The crop was valued at about one hundred million dollars.

Activities in Ghost Month
People think that some things such as doing water sports, moving house, or getting married should not be done during the Ghost Month; however, there are three major (主要的) activities people enjoy doing during the Ghost Month: Pu-du (普渡), setting water lanterns, and Chiang-gu (搶孤).

Pu-du is the activity for treating the ghosts. Three major dates to do Pu-du are the first day, the fifteenth day, and the thirtieth day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. On these dates, people prepare all kinds of food for ghosts.

The activity of setting water lanterns is held in towns or cities near the sea because there are people die in the sea from time to time. Setting water lanterns is to lead the water ghosts to find their way to the land.

The activities of Chiang-gu before and now are different. In the early years, a high platform was set in front of temples with all kinds of foods on it. When the monks finished praying for the spirits, people ran up the platform to grab any food for good luck at the sound of the gong. Today, Chiang-gu has become a group sport competition(競賽). A Gu-peng (platform) is set with four poles. On the top of each pole is placed with foods for the spirits. The poles are more than 36 feet in height. Moreover, they are all covered with butter to make climbing difficult. Four teams from different directions race to the poles; then they climb up to the top of the poles. The first to get the food from the top wins the game.

Pu-du is an activity for people to show their respect to the spirits. On the three major dates for Pu-du during the Ghost Month, Pu-du can be seen everywhere in Taiwan. On the other hand, setting water lanterns and Chiang-gu are activities held in some certain (特定的) cities or towns. These cities or towns have become attractive (具吸引力的) places to tourists.
